Bed Bug Mattress Cover

table of contents

" It is important to make a bedbug mattress cover and box spring cover purchase part of any bed bug treatment plan. Approximately 50% or more of a bed bugs hide in and around the bed. Covers are used after treatment to trap any insects and bedbug eggs that might have been missed during treatment. Covers are also used to protect a mattress in an infested building to protect a mattress and box spring from providing convenient hiding places for the insects.  They will not prevent bed bugs that are elsewhere in an apartment from biting the person sleeping, however they will make the treatment of any infestation easier. "

overview

Studies show that over 50% of bed bugs in a room are located in or around the bed. This is common sense as well, since the insects like to hide as close as possible to their host. Bed bugs will look for tight hiding places, starting with the mattress seams and tufts. From there, they will hide inside and around the box spring, bed frame and then in nearby furniture such as headboards, and night tables.

Insecticide based bed bug treatments can treat the mattress surface, but cannot reach inside the mattress.  For this reason, covers are an excellent way to trap any insect that might have been missed during treatment. it also simplifies treatment, by eliminating the mattress and box spring and possible bed bug hiding places.  We strongly recommend covering both the mattress and box spring.  If you purchase covers, there is no need to throw out a bed bug infested mattress or box spring.

High quality bedbug mattress covers are tested to ensure that bed bugs cannot slip through the fabric or zipper into the mattress. This is important, as covers need to be labeled for bed bugs before they can make the claim that they are for this purpose. Premium options use better covers, are waterproof and are also tested to keep out dust mites.

There are many types of bed bug mattress protectors.  Lower cost versions tend to be made out of vinyl, with higher priced options use a terry top.
