Reader Question: Itchy, Swollen Bumps on Hands

I do not know why I have these bumps on my hands but they itch really bad. They do not spread but sometimes get swollen. Can you help me identify the reason or cause of this please, also I’m not allergic, diabetic, no health problems or conditions. Thank you

Our Response

Hi, thank you for sharing your question and the photos of the bumps on your hands. The images clearly show small, raised bumps that appear inflamed and irritated. Let’s explore some potential causes and what you can do about them

Possible Causes of Itchy Bumps

  • Contact Dermatitis: This occurs when your skin reacts to something it has come into contact with, such as soap, cleaning products, or other irritants. Even if you don’t have allergies, repeated exposure to irritants can trigger symptoms.
  • Dyshidrotic Eczema: This is a common condition that causes itchy, small blisters or bumps, often on the hands and feet. The bumps may swell and feel more irritated over time.
  • Insect Bites: Small, itchy bumps that don’t spread could be caused by insect bites, such as mites or fleas, particularly if you’ve been outdoors or near animals.
  • Bed Bugs: Although less likely since the bumps are isolated to your hands, bed bug bites can cause localized
    irritation and swelling.
  • Fungal or Bacterial Infections: Small, itchy bumps can occasionally be a sign of a localized fungal infection or bacterial irritation.

Steps to Identify the Cause

  1. Review Recent Activities: Think about any new soaps, lotions, or materials your hands may have come into contact with recently. Also, consider outdoor activities where exposure to insects might occur.
  2. Inspect Your Environment: Check for potential irritants, insects, or mites in your home or work environment that could be causing the reaction.
  3. Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep track of when the bumps appear or worsen. Note whether certain activities or times of day seem to trigger them.

How to Relieve the Itch

  • Apply over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream to reduce inflammation and itching.
  • Use cool compresses to soothe irritation and reduce swelling.
  • Try an antihistamine like Benadryl if the itching persists, as it can help reduce allergic-like symptoms.

When to See a Doctor

If the bumps persist, worsen, or show signs of infection (such as pus, increased redness, or warmth), consult a dermatologist for evaluation. They can perform tests to rule out conditions like eczema or infections and provide stronger treatments if necessary.
While the bumps on your hands could be caused by a variety of factors, starting with the steps above can help you identify the root cause and find relief. Let us know if you have further questions or updates—we’re here to help! Best regards,
