Is this a bed bug or carpet beetle?
I just want to know if the picture attached is a bed bug or not.
Thank,
Cecilia
Editor Response to Is This a Bed Bug or Carpet Beetle
Based on these photos, these are not bed bugs.
These appear to be adult Carpet Beetles (likely the Black Carpet Beetle, Attagenus unicolor).
How to tell the difference between a bed bug and carpet beetle:Wings: The most obvious sign is on their back. In your photos, you can see a straight line running down the center of the insect's back. These are hard wing cases (elytra) that meet in the middle. Bed bugs do not have wings or wing cases; their backs have horizontal ridges (segments).
Shape: These beetles are oval and "domed" (convex) like a tiny pill. Bed bugs are extremely flat, often described as looking like a lentil or apple seed.
Color: These are a dark brown/black. While bed bugs can be dark reddish-brown, the hard, shiny shell texture in your photos is characteristic of a beetle.
Good news: They do not bite humans or spread disease. Bad news: They eat natural fibers (wool, silk, fur) and dry goods.
Recommendation:
While they are not as stressful as bed bugs, carpet beetles can damage clothes, rugs, and upholstery.
Vacuum: Thoroughly vacuum the area where you found it, especially along baseboards and under furniture.
Check Fabrics: Inspect wool clothing, blankets, or rugs nearby for signs of damage (small holes).
Wash: If you find them on clothing or bedding, wash the items in hot water to remove any eggs or larvae.
Best of Luck,
Jeff
