Need Help with Saskatoon Bed Bugs

by Elmo
(Saskatoon, SK)

Hi everybody,

I moved in to a apartment owned by rescom in Saskatoon and the owner did not tell me the apartment had bed bugs.

The owners excuse was that most of the high end hotels have them and we were not to tell any one. We knew 5 different people that have them in the same apartment complex, all were bitten. We were all sprayed but they still roam the apartment .

I just thought i would write about this.04/10/11.

Hi Elmo,

I suggest you contact Saskatoon Public Health Services at (306) 655-4605 and the Office of Residential Tenancies. Be sure to notify the landlord in writing about the bed bug problem as well, as this serves as an official record.

In Saskatoon, a landlord has a legal obligation to "maintain rental premises in a good state of repair and fit for habitation." While bed bugs are not considered to be a health emergency since they don't spread disease, the landlord must treat the apartment and inspect adjacent apartments, and do so in a timely manner.

More Saskatoon bed bug information is also available on the health region website, although it doesn't apply to landlord/tenant issues. For information on landlord tenant issues, visit:

Office of Residential Tenancies
120 – 2151 Scarth Street
Regina, SK
S4P 2H8
Toll-free: 1-888-215-2222 (within Saskatchewan)
Toll-free fax: 1-888-867-7776 (within Saskatchewan)
Tel.: 306-787-2699
Fax: 306-787-5574

This office should be able to provide information regarding your rights as a tenant and expectations of the landlord such as how quickly the services need to be provided. They can also advise you on how to enforce your rights.

Best of luck, and I'm sure your note with help other Saskatoon tenants who are experiencing bed bug problems.

Bed bug act in Saskatchewan legislature
by: Anonymous

Saskatchewan has recently passed a bill that is titled "Bill No. 616 The Bed bugs-Right to know Act"

I'm no lawyer but if this is a law/bill/bylaw that was passed in a legislative assembly, you could possibly sue for your rights being broken

Bed Bugs in East Saskatoon Apartment Building
by: Christina Koechl

It is unfortunate that irresponsible people, such as the owner of the Arlington Apt building located at 3001 7th Street East Saskatoon prefers to keep an infestation of bed bugs throughout the building quiet, instead of seeking all the tenants assistance to get rid of them and to do his part to get the place cleaned up. Go on the various web sites reporting the spreading of bed bugs and check the many addresses throughout the city that have the problem. The tenants are the victims in all this. He has known about the ongoing problem for the past two years, and still, right up the June 2012 does nothing but asks the tenants to purchase bug spray. Shame on him.
